Sherburne & GoS Trail Maintenance and BBQ

Fiskars_32_loppers.pngTo kick off our summer trail work series we are partnering with the Granite Backcountry Alliance for a weekend of work & play focused on maintenance of the Sherburne Ski Trail and the Gulf of Slides trail. These two pre-eminent backcountry ski trails are familiar to all backcountry skiers and are in dire need of lots of love and attention in order to restore these runs back to their original width and condition.

Volunteers will meet at Pinkham Notch in front of the AMC's Joe Dodge Lodge at 8am on both Saturday and Sunday mornings June 24th and June 25th, 2017. On Saturday evening we are co-hosting a party with GBA and a volunteer get-together at Black Mountain Ski area in Jackson NH where we hope to have a band with live music, an outdoor BBQ and beer from 5-9pm. Trail work volunteers will be admitted free and are entitled to a complimentary food ticket. Guests of volunteers will be asked to make a $10 donation to either Friends of Tuckerman Ravine or the Granite Backcountry Alliance.

WE ARE AIMING TO SEE 100 VOLUNTEERS EACH DAY!!!! Everyone that skis or rides in Tuckerman Ravine or Gulf of Slides should sign up or at least be "interested" in donating as a way to give back to these trails by helping to clip them back to their original size and width! We will focus on cutting and removing trees and brush that have slowly moved into the trail corridor. Help us celebrate the end of spring skiing by making sure the skiing this coming winter will be epic!

Once volunteers have assembled at the Pinkham Notch we will plan to begin hiking up from the base of the Sherburne Ski Trail with crews getting assigned to brush out specific work areas. This will be a labor intensive day, so come prepared. Bring gloves, eye protection, rain gear and plenty of food & water. Please leave the power tools at home. If you have loppers, a folding saw, or a pole saw, bring those. If all goes well, crews will plan to return to the parking lot around 4pm and can then migrate to the after party at Black Mountain Ski Area in Jackson from there.

If we have enough volunteers on the first day, we may split off teams to work on the Gulf of Slides trail too. Otherwise, we will assess the progress made on the Sherbie on Saturday and either finish up on the Sherbie on Sunday, June 25th or move on to focus additional volunteer efforts on the Gulf of Slides trail.

In addition to spending the day with friends helping to make the Sherburne Trail and Gulf of Slides a better skiing and riding experience, we will also be discussing future plans for the backcountry community to get involved with other trail maintenance and glading projects all around the White Mountain National Forest area and in New Hampshire in general. There are several ski trails that need as much attention as the Sherburne, but first we need to have a big turnout to show support for our existing backcountry trail system.

We are firming up additional details now about how this work weekend will shape up and we will continue to post updates and breaking news here and on the Granite Backcountry Alliance Facebook Page.
