Inferno Volunteers

It truly "takes a village" to put together and host an event like the Tuckerman Inferno Pentathlon. Our dedicated volunteers are part of what makes this race so special - won't you please come out and join us? New volunteers are always welcome and we have a broad range of tasks suitable for any age range and ability - all we need is a cheerful smile and a good attitude about helping out! Here are some of the volunteer teams you can click on to join -- you'll be supporting a great cause and we need your help!RoadSafetyCrew_490px.jpg

This coming year we are ramping up for the 20th Tuckerman Inferno Pentathlon race! A milestone event and major fundraising activity for the Friends of Tuckerman Ravine. We'll need Ski Patrollers on the mountain, Safety Boaters in the river, Road Crossing Guards along the highways and byways, Race Timing Assistants, Transition Zone Support Crew, Race Registration and Race Banquet Set-Up, and more. Volunteers are invited to attend the Inferno Awards Banquet and dinner at Wildcat Ski Area Saturday evening too. Here is where and when we need help:

Friday before the race

  • Course Set-Up -- We will have crews setting up the racecourse in the Mount Washington Valley and on Mount Washington. For the Mount Washington and Tuckerman Ravine Mountain Safety Team we need volunteers that are experienced backcountry skiers or winter hikers with the appropriate winter gear. If you want to help out on the rest of the racecourse set up around the Mount Washington Valley, sign up for the Road Safety Team.
  • Race Registration -- Set up race registration tables and assist with checking in racers and coordinating volunteers.

Saturday, Race Day

  • Road Safety -- Race Start Coordination, Road Crossings, Traffic Control, Parking, Crowd Control, Racer Information, Water & Aid Stations
  • River Safety -- Safety Kayakers/Canoers, River Bank Safety, Whitewater Paddling Experience, or Swiftwater Rescue training required
  • Transition Zone Support -- Parking, Crowd Control, Race Timing Assistants, Gear Logistics, Course Direction. Choices are: the Run-to-Kayak transition at Attitash/Thorne Pond, the Kayak-to-Bike transition at Believe in Books Literacy Foundation Trails, the  Bike-to-Hike transition at Pinkham Notch, and/or the Hike-To-Ski transition up above Hermit Lake.
  • Mountain Safety --- Ski Patrollers, Technical Mountain Rescue, Winter Search & Rescue, Avalanche Training skills desired and necessary.
  • Mountain Operations --- Course Set-Up/Tear Down, Race Timing Assistants, Results Runner/Skier, Crowd Control, and Course Direction.
  • Photography & Film Support --- Photographers and videographers needed to document each segment of the race and to shoot pictures at the awards banquet.
  • Awards Banquet --- Table set Up, Silent Auction, Awards, Banquet Raffle Ticket Sales & Coordination

Thanks again for volunteering in the past, we look forward to seeing you again this coming year!

Kate, anyone looking to volunteer at any of the race transition points (other than up on the mountain) should sign up under the Road Safety Team. Thanks for being willing to help out!
